Most people use 1688.com the same way: translate English keywords to Chinese, scroll, click whatever looks decent.
You're leaving a lot on the table. Here are eight features buried in 1688 that most importers never touch. They'll save you time and help you dodge bad suppliers.
1. Image Search (以图搜货)
What it does: Upload a product photo and 1688 finds identical or similar products across the entire platform.
Why it matters: You see a product on Amazon or TikTok Shop and want to find the factory that makes it. Instead of guessing Chinese keywords, you upload the photo and get direct matches.
How to use it:
- Go to 1688.com
- Click the camera icon in the search bar
- Upload a clear product photo (white background works best)
- 1688 returns visually similar products, often from the original manufacturer
Try this: Screenshot an Amazon listing, crop out the text and background, upload just the product. More often than not, you'll land on the factory that actually makes it.
2. Price Comparison by Image (按图比价)
What it does: After image search, 1688 shows you the same product from multiple suppliers — ranked by price.
Why it matters: The identical product photo is often used by 5-10 different suppliers at different price points. Same product, different factories, different prices. You want the cheapest legitimate supplier.
How to use it: After performing an image search, look for the "price comparison" tab or filter by price from lowest to highest. Check the supplier's transaction history and ratings before contacting the cheapest option — sometimes the lowest price means a trader, not a factory.
3. Supplier Transaction History (成交记录)
What it does: See exactly how many units a supplier has sold, at what price, and to whom.
Why it matters: A supplier claiming "50,000 units sold" might have sold 50,000 units of a different product, not the one you're looking at. Transaction history shows the truth.
How to use it:
- Open a product listing
- Look for "成交记录" (transaction record) on the page
- Filter by "近30天" (last 30 days) to see recent activity
- Check: are they actually selling this product? At what volume?
Red flag: A supplier with zero recent transactions on the product you want to order. They might be out of stock or have stopped producing it.
4. Factory Business License Verification (工商信息)
What it does: View the supplier's registered business license, legal representative, registered capital, and business scope.
Why it matters: You can verify if you're dealing with an actual factory or a trading company. A factory's license will show "生产" (manufacturing) in the business scope. A trading company won't.
How to use it:
- Open the supplier's store page
- Look for the business license badge or "工商信息" link
- Check "经营范围" (business scope) — look for "生产" (manufacture/produce)
- Check "注册资本" (registered capital) — higher = larger company
5. Factory Strength Score (工厂实力)
What it does: 1688 assigns a "factory strength" score based on production capacity, equipment, certifications, and transaction history.
Why it matters: It's a quick filter. Score above 4.5 stars? Likely a legitimate factory. Below 3? Proceed with caution.
How to use it: The factory strength indicator appears on the supplier's store page. It's a composite score. Click into it to see breakdowns for production capacity, R&D capability, quality control, and more.
6. Depth of Supply Verification (深度验厂)
What it does: 1688's verified factory audit program. Third-party inspectors visit the factory and verify: equipment, production lines, quality control processes, certifications, and export capability.
Why it matters: This is the closest thing to visiting the factory yourself. Suppliers pay for this verification and it includes photos and detailed reports.
How to use it:
- Look for the "深度验厂" badge on supplier pages
- Click to view the full audit report
- Pay attention to: actual factory photos (not just the showroom), equipment list, QC process documentation
If your order is above $5,000, only work with 深度验厂 suppliers. Skip the rest.
7. Mobile-Only Discounts (手机专享价)
What it does: Some suppliers list different (lower) prices on the 1688 mobile app.
Why it matters: The price difference can be 5-15%. For a $10,000 order, that's $500-$1,500 in savings.
How to use it: Download the 1688 app (阿里巴巴), scan the same product, and check if there's a "手机专享价" (mobile exclusive price). If you see a lower price, ask the supplier if they'll honor it for your order.
8. Wholesale Price Tiers (混批/阶梯价)
What it does: Many listings show a base price for the minimum order, but the actual price drops significantly at higher quantities. The price tiers are displayed but easy to overlook.
Why it matters: The difference between the "headline price" and the actual price at your order volume can be 30-50%.
How to use it:
- Scroll down on any product page
- Look for the price tier table ("价格梯度" or "阶梯价")
- Identify your quantity level
- Use this as your negotiation anchor, not the headline price
Put It All Together
Run this workflow for any product:
- Image search a trending Amazon product → find the factory
- Check transaction history → verify they're actively selling it
- Verify business license → confirm they're a real factory
- Check for 深度验厂 → trust but verify
- Compare prices across suppliers → get the best deal
- Check mobile app for hidden discounts → save an extra 5-15%
Takes about 15 minutes per product. Can save you 20-40% on sourcing costs.
